A Woman's Courageous Fight for Justice: The Story of Judy Malinowski
This is the horrific story of Judy Malinowski, a woman who was burned alive by her abusive boyfriend.
Judy Malinowski was a 33-year-old mother of two who had endured years of domestic violence at the hands of her boyfriend, Michael Slager.
On August 2, 2015, Slager attacked her in a fit of rage outside a gas station in Ohio. He poured gasoline over her body and set her on fire, leaving her with burns over 80% of her body.
Judy survived the attack, but suffered unimaginable pain and trauma. She underwent more than 50 surgeries and spent almost two years in the hospital.
She lost her ears, fingers, hair and mobility. She had to breathe and eat through tubea. She was constantly at risk of infections and organ failure.
But Judy was a fighter and a survivor. She decided to use her voice to speak out against domestic violence and to seek justice for herself and other victims. She recorded a video testimony from her hospital bed, detailing the abuse she endured and the attack that changed her life forever. She also advocated for stronger laws to protect victims of domestic violence and to punish perpetrators.
Judy's testimony was crucial in convicting Slager of aggravated arson, felonious assault and possession of criminal tools. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in December 2016. However, Judy did not live to see him face trial for murder. She died on June 27, 2017, due to complications from her injuries.
Judy's death sparked outrage and grief among her family, friends and supporters. Her mother, Bonnie Bowes, said that Judy was "a courageous woman who fought as hard as she could". Her father, Jim Malinowski, said that Judy was "a hero" who wanted to help other victims of domestic violence.
Judy's legacy lives on through the Judy Malinowski Law, also known as Judy's Law, which was passed in Ohio in December 2017. The law increases the penalties for cases of assault that result in permanent disfigurement or incapacitation. It also allows prosecutors to pursue murder charges if a victim dies as a result of such an assault, regardless of how much time has passed since the attack.
Judy's story is a tragic reminder of the horrors of domestic violence and the need for more awareness, prevention and intervention. It is also a testament to the strength and courage of a woman who refused to give up and who fought for justice until the end.
