Today we're going to talk about Samson's riddle from Judges 14. This riddle came out of an encounter Samson had with a lion, where he later took honey from the lion's carcass. He posed this riddle to the Philistines that they could not solve. We're going to explore riddles, enigmas, and dark sayings in Scripture and how they connect to wisdom.

There's a verse in Proverbs 1:6 that says "To understand a proverb and the interpretation, the words of the wise and their dark sayings." So a proverb involves dark sayings or riddles. These require critical thinking to figure out, which develops wisdom. Samson's riddle caused great frustration and eventually warfare between him and the Philistines. It all started with his riddle in Judges 14:14 - "Out of the eater came something to eat; out of the strong came something sweet." This was something the Philistines could not figure out.

Riddles were used in ancient times by the wise to teach and develop wisdom in the young, by training their minds to think critically. Solving riddles demonstrated that someone was wise. When the Philistines could not solve Samson's riddle, it revealed their pride - they resorted to cheating rather than humbly admitting they could not figure it out. This led to escalating conflict between Samson and the Philistines that ultimately resulted in Samson defeating them.

God often uses simple things like riddles to frustrate the proud and arrogant. Wisdom comes through humility and revelation by the Spirit. Riddles and dark sayings represent the deeper, complex truths of God's Word and ways. As we remain humble and seek after God's wisdom, He will give us understanding and reveal His secrets to us through His Spirit.

Let's pursue true wisdom through God's Word and Spirit. I pray for fresh revelation and understanding over your life, that you would grow in wisdom and insight into the deeper mysteries of Christ. May the wicked be confounded but the righteous walk in the light of God's truth. In Jesus' name, amen.
