1. Metal detectorist finds Roman treasure in Suffolk. In 1992, Eric Lawes found a 1,500-year-old Roman treasure while looking for a lost hammer in Suffolk, England. The hoard included 15,000 gold and silver coins and 200 pieces of gold jewelry. The British government purchased the hoard for £1.75 million, and it is now on display at the British Museum in London.

2. Saccharin was discovered by accident in 1879 by Constantin Fahlberg, who tasted his hands after working with coal tar derivatives and found them sweet. He traced the sweetness to the compound benzoic sulfimide, which he and his colleague, Ira Remsen, went on to synthesize on a large scale.
