STATEMENT FROM THE PAKISTANI HIGH COMMISSIONER TO THE UK, NAFEES ZAKARIA:

Afghanistan is in turmoil for the last 40 years due to watershed events of 1979 and 9-11. Afghan people have suffered immensely and continue to suffer. Three generations have missed out on education, million lives have been lost, infrastructure has been completely devastated and millions of Afghans have been displaced. It is a pity that some people are still thinking of playing political games in Afghanistan and are completely oblivious of and apathetic towards Afghans’ sufferings. Countries should be working towards bringing peace to Afghanistan rather than using the war torn country to cause instability in the region.

Pakistan has been hosting, initially 6 million of them during 80s. Even today, more than 3 million Afghan Refugees live in Pakistan. We are hosting them for four decades for the sake of humanity and they being from a neighbouring country with which we share 2600 kilometres long and porous border. Tens of thousands of Afghan nationals cross border to visit Pakistan every day for a variety of reasons. Anything that happens in Afghanistan, good or bad, has direct bearing on the situation in Pakistan. Security of Afghanistan is intrinsically linked to the security in Pakistan.

We sincerely want to see peace in Afghanistan for Afghans. Pakistan has been playing a constructive role to that end unlike our neighbour, which remains engaged in intrigues and anti-Pakistan propaganda to spread hatred and venom, and uses Afghan soil to finance terrorism in Pakistan. Statement of Mr. Chuck Hagel, confessions of Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav and voluntary revelation by Mr. Ehsanullah Ehsan, the ex-spokesman of TTP and Jamaat ul Ahrar are testimonies of Indian involvement in perpetrating terrorism in Pakistan from Afghanistan.
