Maa Kushmanda: The Fourth Devi of Navratri
Navratri is a festival of nine nights that celebrates the divine feminine energy in Hinduism. Each night is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga, who is the supreme manifestation of Shakti, the cosmic power. The fourth night of Navratri is devoted to Maa Kushmanda, the goddess who created the universe with her divine smile. She is an aspect of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer.
Maa Kushmanda is the fourth among the nine forms of Durga, also called Navadurga. She represents the creative and radiant form of the goddess, who is the source of all life and light. She is also the goddess of the heart chakra, or Anahata, which is located in the centre of the chest and governs love, compassion, and joy. By worshipping Maa Kushmanda, one can activate the energy at the heart chakra and enhance one's emotional well-being and happiness.
Maa Kushmanda has a fascinating story that reveals her power and grace in creating and sustaining the universe. According to Hindu mythology, before the creation of the universe, there was only darkness and nothingness. The supreme consciousness, or Brahman, decided to manifest itself in a feminine form and create the universe. This feminine form was Maa Kushmanda, who emerged from a cosmic egg (anda) with a little warmth (ushma) and a smile (ku). She smiled and released her divine light, which illuminated the darkness and formed the sun. She then created the other celestial bodies, such as the moon, stars, planets, etc., with her light. She also created the three worlds: heaven (swarga), earth (bhumi), and hell (patala), along with their inhabitants: gods (devas), humans (manavas), and demons (asuras). She is thus the mother of all creation and the giver of light and energy.
Maa Kushmanda is depicted with eight hands and has a half-moon on her forehead. She holds a lotus flower, a water pot, a rosary, a bow and arrow, a discus, a mace, and a jar of nectar in her hands. She rides on a lion or a tiger. The lotus flower symbolizes her beauty, purity, and spirituality. The water pot symbolizes her nourishment and abundance. The rosary symbolizes her devotion and meditation. The bow and arrow symbolize her power and protection. The discus symbolizes her wisdom and justice. The mace symbolizes her strength and courage. The jar of nectar symbolizes her bliss and immortality.
Maa Kushmanda is worshipped on the fourth day of Navratri with great reverence and joy. She is offered red or pink flowers¹, pumpkin², coconut³, jaggery⁴, rice⁴, milk⁴, ghee⁴, honey⁴, sugar⁴, cardamom⁴, cloves⁴, betel leaves⁴, nuts⁴ as bhog or food offerings. Her mantra is:
ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः॥
Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah॥
Meaning: Salutations to the goddess Kushmanda.
Her prayer is:
सुरासम्पूर्णकलशं रुधिराप्लुतमेव च।
दधाना हस्तपद्माभ्यां कूष्माण्डा शुभदास्तु मे॥
Surasampurnakalasham Rudhiraplutameva Cha।
Dadhana Hastapadmabhyam Kushmanda Shubhadastu Me॥
Meaning: Holding a jar full of nectar and blood in her hands, Kushmanda bestows auspiciousness on me.
By worshipping Maa Kushmanda, one can attain peace, prosperity, and happiness in life. She also bestows health, wealth, strength, and intelligence to overcome the challenges and difficulties of life. She is the mother of all beings and the embodiment of love and compassion. She is the fourth step towards the realization of the supreme goddess Durga, who is the ultimate goal of Navratri.
