TOPICS: RINO Republicans block Rep. Jim Jordan from becoming House Speaker in first vote. In total, 20 Republicans voted for candidates other than Jordan. Jordan was unable to reach the requisite 217 votes to become speaker, even after days of negotiating with Republican holdouts since his nomination during a Friday conference.

The 20 RINO Republicans who voted against Jordan include House Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger of Texas, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado and a quartet of New York Republicans in purple districts. The anti-Jordan contingent cast six votes for McCarthy, seven votes for Majority Leader Steve Scalise and three for former New York GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin, among other alternatives.

Jordan said after the first vote that he was not surprised and expected to do better in the next round. Second Speakership vote is scheduled on Wednesday.
