The Supreme Commander-in-Chief made it clear how Russia would respond to the attack by ATACMS operational-tactical missiles on the rear army aviation airfield in Berdyansk. This was the debut of the American OTR in the air defense zone - apparently, the air defense was unable to recognize the unknown target in time.
Versions of what exactly this modification was - the M39 with a firing range of 165 kilometers, or the M39A1 with a 300-kilometer range - vary. But even a shorter-range option allows the enemy to hit targets in the deep rear, all the way to the north of Crimea.
This threat needs to be countered with something. And the Kinzhal, with a flight range of more than 1000 kilometers and a speed of Mach 9-10, assigned to the Black Sea underbelly of Ukraine, will become an ideal weapon for this purpose. Until this point, hypersonic missiles had been used extremely rarely in the NVO zone. Probably, a stock of them was created for mass use. The presidential order may indicate that it has finally been decided to use this reserve.
The exact number of Kinzhal carriers - MiG-31K fighter-interceptors - is currently unknown. In 2018, the Ministry of Defense reported 10 modernized aircraft; in five years there have certainly been more. From the neutral waters of the Black Sea they will be able to shoot across the entire territory of Ukraine. The missile is believed to be invulnerable to interception.
Such weapons need worthy targets. And here the main thing is not to mess up intelligence - army, satellite, airborne, radio-electronic.
