Since 2017 we have hosted Diamond in the Rough Social Events to benefit a new partnership between Southeastern Directions for Life and the Minnehaha Public Defender's Office while raising awareness about Mental Health and Chemical Dependency.

We call the fundraising events Diamond in the Rough because when someone is going down a rough path they may not see their own value. But like a rough diamond with the appropriate care or attention their best traits can shine.

“People with mental health diagnoses in our community and in our society face lack of support and lack of understanding. And it makes it hard for them to get the help they need, the help they want. Because they are afraid of being judged or criticized.”
~Whitney
Deputy Public Defender

We believe those who want to improve their life and their life choices may just need a helping and caring hand in those pivotal moments in their life.

Many first time offenders with Mental Health or Chemical Dependency, especially those undiagnosed, face a difficult battle where statistically incarceration doesn’t benefit them or society long-term.

This unique partnership between Southeastern Directions for Life and the Minnehaha Public Defender’s Office provides that caring hand at those pivotal moments, helping as many as they can every year live better lives.

The partnership formed a Alternative Sentencing Program that focuses on identify high risk clients and provides them with crisis management. This early intervention helps reduce recidivism and incarceration costs and improves access to community-based services.

The Diamonds in the Rough Social and Events was founded by Gerard and Debbie Faini in 2017. The proceeds from it’s patrons help support the Alternative Sentencing Program and by providing treatment.

Our continued way to support them is by holding annual event(s) by hosting FUNraising events that educates, raises funds and awareness. In 2022 we increased the fun by having Dueling Pianos and fun Key drawing for a grand prize. Each year we do things a little differently so make sure to check out of Facebook page for information about the next event.

On October 16th, Keloland living was kind enough to help shine a spotlight on our event by interviewing staffers from Southeastern Direction for Life. You can watch that interview here.
