Burkina Faso has marked the 36th anniversary of the assassination of its favourite son Thomas Sankara - by making October 15th a public holiday.

Additionally, president Ibrahim Traoré officially declared him a national hero. He also laid the first stones for a gigantic new monument in Sankara’s honour, as well as renamed a key road after him.

Thomas Sankara and 12 other revolutionaries were assassinated in a Western-backed power-grab in 1987.

African Stream’s Inem Richardson was in Ouagadougou for this year’s commemorations and filed this report.
