Originally named Zenoism and later changed to Stoicism, named after the stoa poikile or “painted porch.” This philosophy originated in Athens around 300 B.C.E and was also wildly popular among the Romans. Some notable Stoic philosophers are the emperor Marcus Aurelius, the adviser Seneca the Younger, the slave Epictetus, and Chrysippus.
