Maxine, I love this question because it tells me not only are you paying attention but you have your thinking cap on. I applaud you for that. As you may have heard me say in other videos, metformin also sold under the brand name of Glucophage, fortamet, Riomet, and Glumetza can both cause and worsen peripheral neuropathy because this drug lowers the absorption of vitamin B12 in your small intestine.

So, it sounds like your concern is if you’re taking B12 while on metformin will it even get into the cells. It certainly is more challenging for your body, so the best thing you can do is to take a calcium supplement along with the B12. This will definitely increase your B12 absorption, despite taking metformin. You’ll need to take 1200 mg spread out throughout the day. This will definitely limit the B12 deficiency caused by metformin and allow your B12 supplement to be better absorbed. There are many great calcium supplements on the market. The most common one I prescribe for my patients is by a company named Thorne. You can find this on Amazon.
