The Spartans had a practice called krypteia, in which young Spartan men were encouraged to steal food and clothing from their neighbors, the helots (slaves) as part of their training. If they were caught, they were beaten or even killed. This practice was designed to teach the boys how to be resourceful and self-sufficient, as well as to instill in them a sense of discipline and obedience.

It also taught them how to be stealthy and helped to keep them in shape and prepared for war.
