The initial 126 sonnets are dedicated to a young male, while the final 28 are directed towards an enigmatic 'dark lady'.

Sonnet 10 chastises the young man for his self-hatred and refusal to procreate, urging him to overcome this disdain by bestowing his beauty upon a child, thereby enriching both the world and ensuring his own immortal legacy.
