Prison Island & Nakupenda Island is one of Zanzibar's most popular tours! But is it worth it?
Start by visiting the famous prison island which was originally built to house slaves, before eventually being turned into a quarantine island where crews would have to stay before entering the island of Zanzibar to ensure they weren't spreading disease.
Nowadays the island serves as tourist attraction and home to over 100 giant tortoises which roam the "tortoise sanctuary".
Nakupenda island is a beautiful (but busy) sand bank just a short boat journey away from prison island and where most tours will stop for lunch and relaxing for the second half of their trip.
