The speed of an orca, or killer whale, can vary depending on a variety of factors, including their age, health, and purpose of their movement. On average, orcas swim at a speed of around 3 to 4 miles per hour (4.8 to 6.4 kilometers per hour) when cruising or traveling. However, they are capable of reaching much higher speeds when hunting or playing. During these bursts of activity, they can swim at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour) or more for short distances. The speed at which an orca swims is highly adaptive to their specific circumstances and needs.
