During a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on “Victims of Violent Crime in the District of Columbia” on Oct. 12, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) grilled Lindsey Appiah, D.C.’s deputy mayor for public safety and justice, over crimes in the city. “Do you think the soft-on-crime policies are one reason?” Mr. Gaetz asked when Ms. Appiah answered his question on why crime rates in many cases doubled “over the course of a year” in D.C.
