In a tense atmosphere, King Abimelech and his army commander, Phichol, approach Abraham. Abimelech says, "God seems to favor you. Promise you'll treat me and my land with the kindness I've shown you." Abraham agrees, but also confronts Abimelech about a seized well.

Abimelech is surprised and says, "I wasn't aware of this." Wanting to mend things, Abraham gives him livestock as a peace offering and they form a covenant. Abraham then sets aside seven lambs as a symbol.

"What are these for?" Abimelech inquires.

"They are proof that I dug that well," Abraham replies. They name the place Beersheba, sealing their oath. Abimelech and Phichol leave, content. Abraham plants a tamarisk tree there and prays to the Everlasting God, settling in Philistine territory for many days.
