In BJJ, and many other grappling arts, the knee ride (or any of its other names) is commonly used as a transition to more stable positions. In Judo, the knee ride is one of a number of positions known as "Uki-Gatame" 浮固, or a "Floating Position", which indicates that it's not the most stable way to hold down a strong, capable opponent. Still, this position is an important one and everyone training should learn how to escape from it and use it to set up some great attacks.
