Even with today’s advancements in technology, people are still very much afraid to travel by plane, fearing a terrible crash or a terrorist hijacking. But just how dangerous is it to travel by flying?

Global terrorism soared 25% in the last 2 years alone and poses a serious threat to air travel. The former US Secretary of Homeland Security said that terrorist have become far more interested in “downing planes” that ever before, especially if they were American airplanes with mostly US passengers. First it was 9/11, when the Al Qaeda crushed two passenger planes into the Twin Towers, leaving 3000 dead and over 6000 injured. Three years later, two Russian airplanes were blown up in the air by Chechen suicide bombers; airport security let the female attackers board the plane without checking their passports.

But between the years 2006 and 2014, there have been less than 30 plane hijackings. The chances of being killed in a terror attack on an airplane is actually really tiny, less than 0.0002%. Besides, the most lethal aspect of flying isn’t crashing, but the possible freak fire, which can be unstoppable mid air. There is also the increased chance of catching a cold, which is 100 times higher while of a plane journey.

The most dangerous part of flying is actually landing; 25% of accidents happen during touchdown, mostly because of the close proximity to the ground.
