Metro Detroit student trapped in Hurricane Irma helped by university
7 years ago
Hurricane Irma has destroyed St. Martin damaging more than 90% of the island. One of the few buildings left standing is American University of the Caribbean. First year medical student Preety Mahal says she and her mother arrived to the university last week knowing the hurricane was possibly going to hit. It wasn’t until they arrived they learned how serious it was. Mahal says at least 500 students are taking shelter in the school. Eight hundred locals are receiving care from medical students like Mahal. The island has no power, and Mahal says there are no supplies and food to take care of everyone.
