My old tower fan, the similarly sized and similarly priced Princess 3500 after a year or so of use developed multiple faults and had to be replaced. This 42" smart tower fan fan from Dreo seemed the best bet.

The 32.3 x 32.3 x 106.4, 4.45Kg device arrived in a suitably large and impressive box within which was the tower fan itself, a remote control, a quick start guide, and a comprehensive and well written user guide. Build quality is good but all plastic and not quite to the premium level I was hoping for. However, I must say that nothing looks likely to fail anytime soon.

Before use, the two halves of the base have to be fitted together and then the tower has to be secured to the base. Fitting the two halves of the base together seems simple enough once you have done it but take a little thinking about first as the instructions are not as clear as they could be. Also, remember to feed the hard-wired power cable through the centre of the base before locking the two halves together. The fan then just slots easily into the base.

Once assembled the next task is to connect the fan to the Dreo app on your phone. Setting up is easy enough to do, particularly if you have another Dreo device already connected. First, Long press the Oscillation button on the top of the fan to enter Wi-Fi setup mode and then open the Dreo app and press the add device button. The App walks you through the whole thing but remember if this is your first device to ensure your phone is connected to a 2.4Ghz network. Remember also to have the name and password for your home Wi-Fi network available as it will be needed during setup. To connect to Alexa or Google just download and enable the Dreo skill, this can be done from within the Dreo app, and let Alexa/Google discover the new device which can then be controlled by voice as well as with the Alexa and Dreo apps.

The unit comes with an attractive and well made remote control and this works well although some more advanced features have to be set using the app. The useful carry handle aperture on top of the fan serves well as a storage compartment for the remote when not needed.

There is a large mono touchscreen panel on the top of the unit to show the current fan status and for manual control. With this, you can select the Operating Mode, Fan Speed, Timer, Oscillation, and mute or enable the system beeps. The panel will switch off after 1 minute in normal use or five seconds in sleep mode and can be set to always on using the app which can also be used to set the display to show the fan speed or room temperature.

The fan has a relatively modest oscillation range of just 90 degrees but for me, this is fine as when positioned in a corner pretty much the whole room gets the benefit. The fan puts out a good volume of air and feels to me more powerful than the Princess unit it replaced. The fan wobbles a bit when in oscillating mode but less so than the Princess. The six-speed fan also offers three operating modes: Normal, Natural, Auto and Sleep. Natural aims to imitate an outdoor breeze and varies both intensity and oscillation, Sleep mode reduces the intensity and noise, although at a maximum of 34dB, it is one of the quietest large fans I have ever used. Auto mode varies the fan level according to the room temperature. There is also a timer that can be set to between 1 and 12 hours of operation.

Despite the few drawbacks, this is probably the best big fan I have ever used. It is easy to configure and simple to operate. In use, it puts out a good but not excessive amount of airflow and is quiet and non-intrusive in use. It is also easier to store away than a traditional fan when not needed.

If you need a stylish and attractive fan and have a smart or connected home, then this could be for you.
