Ramona Africa: ‘pressure’ Moves The Government

As a revolutionary activist, Ramona Africa says the only way to defeat systemic racism in the United States is with a united African people taking matters into their own hands.

Ramona Africa was a member of one of the most iconic Black liberation groups, MOVE. It was a U.S.-based communal organisation that unapologetically stood for African liberation, and against slavery of any kind as well as environmental destruction. Formed in 1972, their name was not an acronym, but rather a statement to mean that “everything that lives,” moves. In May of 1985, nearly 500 police officers surrounded the MOVE house in Philadelphia and engaged the group in a gun fire. Later, under the command of the police commissioner, a bomb was dropped on the compound, killing six adults and five children. Members trying to escape the inferno were shot. Two survivors came out. One of them being MOVE member Ramona Africa. Ramona was later convicted over conspiracy charges related to the incident and served seven years in jail.
