The solar system extends much farther than the eight planets, with the Kuiper Belt ranging between 30 and 50 astronomical units (AU) from the sun, and the Oort Cloud stretching to at least 1,000 AU.
The discovery of these 12 massive objects around 60 AU from the sun was made using artificial intelligence to analyze data from the Subaru Telescope. This data was initially collected to find potential targets for NASA's New Horizons spacecraft.
The finding suggests that the solar system may be more massive than previously thought, aligning better with what astronomers know about other star systems, according to the study's lead author.
The objects' location around 10 AU from the Kuiper Belt indicates they may be influenced by something more massive, possibly another undiscovered Kuiper Belt containing unknown objects.
