We Unbox & Set Up the Limited Edition Super Mario Nintendo Switch OLED

In this episode, we unbox, setup, and test out the Limited Edition Super Mario Red Nintendo Switch OLED, released in October 2023.

It is not every day that Nintendo releases a new system, let alone a special themed version of a console either. In the summer of 2023, Nintendo announced a ton of great games coming to the Switch, but they also announced a very special edition of the Nintendo Switch Itself. For the second time, they released a Mario-themed Nintendo Switch, and unlike the last version which was the original Switch, this is a Switch OLED model. That's right, Nintendo Has Released A New Limited Edition Super Mario Nintendo Switch OLED.

The packaging is identical to other OLED Switch Models, meaning the artwork has the vertical design vs the original's horizontal box. My understanding is that this allows Nintendo to fit a few more units in each container, so their cost to ship is reduced. The box has very, and I mean, subtle Mario branding to it. It's almost blink and you'll miss it. I do wish it was more pronounced, similar to what they did with the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom-themed system.

Removing the system from the box we get to see that this is pretty much identical to other Switch OLED models. The Nintendo Switch OLED features an upgraded 7-inch OLED display, an increased from the 6.2 inch LCD display from the original models. I love this display as the OLED looks absolutely beautiful, & battery life is largely unaffected from the original model. The Switch OLED also includes new enhanced speakers for better sound in handheld mode as well, and man these are a HUGE improvement!. The Switch OLED also features a completely new kickstand design, similar to what Microsoft has created for the Surface line of tablets, and an updated dock with an integrated ethernet port. On-board storage has been doubled compared to the original model, from 32GB to 64 GB. Finally, the output resolutions are also unchanged from the original launch models at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode.

The Switch OLED uses the same nVidia Tegra Processor and GPU as the Switch consoles that launched in March of 2017, over 6 years ago. The battery is also the same, the left Joy Con doesn't have the D-Pad like the Switch Lite does, there's no additional RAM for processing power, and this just feels like more of the same. We also have to say that 1080P in docked and 720P in handheld modes are unforgiveable in 2023.

I do wish that the Mario Theming was more pronounced on the system than what it is. The Mario on the Dock and the Coins inside the rear of the dock. Compared to the Zelda-themed Switch OLED, it just seems rather underwhelming. If you have a Switch Lite or Switch OLED already or haven't invested in the ecosystem as of yet, I love the concept of the Mario Edition Switch OLED, I just don't feel this is special enough. For those who already have a standard Nintendo Switch, there's just not enough here in my opinion. Where the Switch was innovative, and the Switch Lite improved the handheld experience, this really doesn't do enough that is new or unique over the existing hardware.
