When disaster strikes, the compassion shown by random strangers is what makes us believe that a better tomorrow is coming. Tropical Storm Harvey has been ravaging Texas for almost a month and with Hurricane Irma on the horizon, it is stories like this one that brings faith in humanity back.

No one anticipated the water to rise so quickly and ferociously as it did in Lisa Eicher’s house. So when she called the firefighters’, her plea was a mouthful. "We've got two kids with Down syndrome, a three-legged dog, and a pig — all of whom will be freaked out." said the mother on the phone.

The family moved their pet pig Penny to the garage, since her pen had already started flooding, but when the firefighters arrived, they had to get the entire family out and that meant Penny too. Rescuing the family’s dog was a simple enough job, but they just couldn't leave her behind. The Eichers have had Penny since she was an eight-week-old piglet, a gift for their daughter Ace for Valentine’s Day. Now she is part of the family.

The team of firefighters took the entire family to a higher ground where they could shelter from the pouring rain, where perfect strangers offered their help. Lisa posted a story on her Instagram with Penny the pig and it has been shared more than 16,000 times on Facebook.
