The Velvet Underground - "Sunday Morning" (Live)

From Lou Reed's final gig with the Velvet Underground (until their 1993 reunion) - August 23, 1970 at Max's Kansas City, NYC. Originally appeared on LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY (Cotillion, 1972). It's interesting to note that, eleven seconds in, you can hear what sounds like Doug Yule turning to his younger brother Billy and saying, "'Sunday Morning.' Do you know 'Sunday Morning'?" And, in fact, Billy (who was standing in for Maureen Tucker during the VU's summer '70 residency at Max's) has said that "Lou changed the set" that night to feature material from the band's early days. For an impromptu performance, this song works very well, and certainly retains the fragile melancholy of the studio version.

Written by Lou Reed & John Cale

Lou Reed - guitar & lead vocal / Sterling Morrison - guitar / Doug Yule - bass & backing vocal / Billy Yule - drums
