4 Pillars of Education
4 Pillars of Education
The "Four Pillars of Education" is a concept developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to outline the fundamental principles of education. These pillars were introduced in the report "Learning: The Treasure Within," also known as the Delors Report, which was published in 1996 by the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century, chaired by Jacques Delors. The Four Pillars of Education are as follows:
Learning to Know: This pillar emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge and intellectual skills. It promotes the idea that education should help individuals develop their cognitive abilities, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Learning to know involves gaining a deep understanding of various subjects and topics.
Learning to Do: This pillar focuses on the development of practical skills and competencies. It recognizes that education should prepare individuals for the workforce and practical life. Learning to do encompasses vocational and technical training, as well as the ability to apply knowledge in real-world situations.
Learning to Be: This pillar highlights personal development and the cultivation of individual potential. It underscores the importance of education in helping individuals become well-rounded and self-aware human beings. Learning to be includes aspects of character development, emotional intelligence, and self-discovery.
Learning to Live Together: This pillar emphasizes the importance of social skills, intercultural understanding, and global citizenship. It promotes the idea that education should foster tolerance, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among individuals from different backgrounds and cultures. Learning to live together encourages respect for diversity and the building of inclusive societies.
These four pillars are seen as essential components of a holistic and well-rounded education. They suggest that education should go beyond the mere transmission of knowledge and encompass the development of skills, character, and the ability to live and work harmoniously in diverse societies. The Four Pillars of Education continue to be influential in shaping educational policies and practices worldwide.
