Cutline: NASA’s Stennis Space Center has begun a months-long project to upgrade the waterway lock system that connects the Pearl River to the seven-and-a-half-mile canal network leading to the site’s test complex stands. The system was first constructed in the 1960s when NASA established the propulsion test site in Hancock County, Mississippi. For the current project, crews have installed a temporary stop log and removed the lock system’s four chamber gates. The gates have been transported off site for inspection and refurbishment. They are expected to return for reinstallation in the spring of 2023.
