Morgan Zegers discusses Federalist Paper No. 20, “The Same Subject Continued: The Insufficiency of the Present Confederation to Preserve the Union.” In the last of this series of papers, Hamilton and Madison continue to compare the failures of previous confederacies by examining The United Netherlands.

At the time, The United Netherlands was made up of small independent regions of aristocracies that came together to form a sovereign state. Every province and city had to unanimously vote to enact any change, creating a slow and inefficient confederacy. This inefficiency rewarded corruption that led to its eventual collapse.
