It’s been labeled the #johnnybrightincident and it happened in 1951 when @drakeuniversity played @okstate in Oklahoma. Those Sooners didn’t welcome the first Black player, Johnny Bright, with open arms and knocked him unconscious 3 times in the first 7 minutes; even breaking his jaw. 😯

Johnny returned with a face mask. That soon became the mandate in @ncaa football. Conspicuously, the NFL made the same mandate by 1955.

Is this the reason why? I think so. What about you? 🏈🤔
