We used a separator to open up the contact as the inter-proximal space was lost over years of restorations. This is a simple tip I learned in residency - we used a temporary crown to increase the space over a few weeks. It worked actually quite well.

We replaced this restoration b/c the gingival contour was poor (you could see the imprint of the wedge in the restoration) and it shredded floss. Hope you enjoy
