The family called for murder charges to be filed against both officers, and the 911 dispatcher to be fired for their conduct, and for the people who called 911 to be charged for their actions. On July 22, 2021, the Phoenix Police Department announced plans to terminate the employment of the shooting officer, though he was later reinstated after his termination was downgraded to a 240-hour suspension.
In November 2020, a $3 million settlement was negotiated with Whitaker's family. In January 2021, Maricopa County District Attorney announced that she would not be pursuing criminal charges against the officer.
