Fundraiser Helps Bring Retired Military Dogs Back Home

What some people seem to forget is that veterans don’t walk just on two feet; there are some who also walk on all fours. That is why Pet Valu store across the US have teamed up with United States War Dogs Association for the annual Patriotic Pets fundraiser. The purpose of this event, which is held seven years in a row, is simple, but very significant - to help bring military dogs back home, where they can properly retire.

Joe Dent, vice president and U.S. general manager for Pet Valu last year, said that the fundraiser get bigger with each passing year; they were able to collect over $500.000 for the USWDA last year alone.

Sergeant Able is one such retiree who came back from duty overseas and was immediately adopted by U.S. Army veteran John Meeks. He said: “I’m just blessed. To be able to adopt a military dog, it’s just the top of my list, you know?”

Along with bringing the dogs back home to the United States to be adopted, the fundraiser also provides equipment for their new owners. That way the dogs are cared for without wanting for anything, especially after serving the country as military working dogs.
