Beamforming is the act of focusing WiFi directly towards a specific device, like aiming a flashlight to shine brighter in a particular direction rather than just scattering the light everywhere.

Beamforming improves the signal strength, range, and reliability for devices.

Beamforming is common in modern WiFi routers. Recently, many laptops, smartphones, and WiFi adapters have multiple internal antennas, enabling them to use beamforming too.

But wait, WiFi adapters and router don't have moving parts? How can they "beamform"?

Beamforming is accomplished using advanced signal processing techniques. WiFi adapters and routers can manipulate the phase and amplitude of the signals they emit through their internal or external antennas to intentionally interact and distort the typically uniform WiFi coverage, causing the WiFi to literally, move around.

When the signals interact and combine in the air, they create constructive interference that builds up in a specific direction, making the clients connection in that direction stronger.

When they interfere in just the right way and cause an increase in the connection quality, the adapter or router remembers the settings and will continue to use it, now effectively "knowing" the direction of the client or router.
