Established in 1942 at a cost of $22.5 million, the Longhorn ammunition plant produced approximately 393 million pounds of TNT during World War II before closing in 1945. In 1952, the complex reopened to produce solid fuel and rocket motors for the army, operating until 1997 when it permanently closed. The massive complex featured 451 buildings, a power grid, and treatment plant. A railroad system was constructed throughout the facility to transport materials and finished products. However, the site has faced contamination issues, rendering large portions inaccessible while cleanup efforts continue.
