I Joined an Expedition to Save Coral Reefs | Maldives Diving

Welcome to the Maldives underwater world. In this video, I joined a scientific diving expedition in the Maldives to study the health of the corals in the area. Coral reefs provide habitat and shelter for a diverse range of species, including fish, invertebrates, and plants. They also protect coastlines from storms and erosion, provide jobs for local communities, and offer opportunities for recreation. Over half a billion people depend on reefs for food, income, and protection.
Despite their importance, coral reefs are facing significant threats, primarily due to climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing, and coastal development. The Maldivian coral reefs experienced a severe bleaching event in 2016 and more than 60% of coral in reefs in the Maldives had been affected. That is why monitoring corals and conservation efforts are crucial to protect and restore these vital ecosystems.
