The Creator checks the box for our ration of quality high-concept science fiction that today’s audiences only receive on an annual basis.

Appropriately set 100 years after 1970, the film is a futuristic retelling of the Vietnam War (but this time against robots) in a frightening but probably accurate vision of the future of artificial intelligence as the inevitable next step in human evolution centered around a human/robot hybrid messiah figure in the form of a little girl named Alphie, short for Alpha Omega (as in Jesus’ final words in the book of Revelation), and her parents Mary and Joseph, I mean Maya and Joshua, sent by the Creator to end the war and bridge the gap between humankind and AI.

So yea, there’s A LOT going on here. The only downside is that even with this amazing intersection of themes, the overall story is bogged down by too many ideas and unnecessary twists and turns and would have benefited from some streamlining because with so much to get through it oftentimes feels a bit rushed, which only compounds confusion and dampens the emotional significance, which is too bad because the conceptualization and production value is so damn high.

Don’t let that deter you from seeing it, but unfortunately there’s lots of room for improvement on this one.
