Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica, located on the border between Yugoslavia and Hungary. At the tender age of nine, Tarkay was cruelly sent to the Mathausen concentration camp by the Nazis. Following the end of the war, he made his way back to his homeland, where he discovered an unyielding fascination with the world of art. He accomplished the remarkable feat of winning a prestigious painting award while still studying.
Tarkay and his family immigrated to Israel in 1949, where they were immediately directed to a transit camp designed for new arrivals in Beer Ya'akov. They spent the following two years living in a Kibbutz. In 1951, Tarkay was awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem. Despite having extraordinary talent and a deep passion for art, he was compelled to end his studies prematurely and depart from the academy due to the demanding financial situation he faced at home. He was granted the opportunity to pursue his scholarship, studying under the renowned artist Schwartzman, until his mobilization to serve in the Israeli army.
Upon his return to Tel Aviv, Tarkay found solace in the comforting familiarity of his surroundings while he pursued his passion for art. Fueled by his ambition, he decided to join the prestigious Avni Institute of Art, and in 1956, he successfully graduated from there. At that place, he had the privilege of being taught by extraordinary teachers like Mokady, Janko, Schtreichman, and Sematsky.
