"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is set in a future Earth that has been devastated by World War Terminus, a nuclear conflict that has left the planet's ecosystem in ruins. The story takes place in and around San Francisco, where the remaining human population is struggling to survive. Most people have emigrated to off-world colonies, leaving behind a dwindling society of those who couldn't afford to leave or chose to stay for other reasons.
The story follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter or "blade runner" who is tasked with "retiring" (destroying) rogue androids that have escaped to Earth. Androids are virtually indistinguishable from humans, and the only reliable way to identify them is through a series of psychological tests known as the Voigt-Kampff test, which measures emotional responses. The novel explores Deckard's moral and ethical dilemmas as he hunts down these artificial beings.
One of the central conflicts in the novel is Deckard's growing sense of empathy towards the androids. As he interacts with them, he begins to question the morality of his job and the nature of humanity itself. This theme of empathy is a recurring motif in Philip K. Dick's work and is a cornerstone of the novel's exploration of identity.
