US government shutdown looms with October deadline

The clock is ticking and millions of federal workers in America are keeping a close eye on Capitol Hill, where a group of Republicans is holding up a spending bill.

U.S. President Joe Biden says he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had already agreed on a spending plan, which included a trillion dollars in spending cuts over the next decade. But their plan is unlikely to pass the House, according to reports.

Without an agreement, funding for the government will expire Oct. 1, and that would mean no paychecks for tens of millions of workers who would be immediately furloughed — including the military.
