Yes, it’s possible to be dehydrated even though you’re retaining fluid. First, I’ll explain that glucose (sugar) is stored in the body as glycogen, which is a string of glucose molecules. One gram of glycogen bonds to two grams of water, making glycogen like a fluid-filled sponge.
Thus, when you’re running your body on sugar instead of fat, you hold a lot of fluid in your body. You have swelling, perhaps in your ankles. When you press your finger into the swelling, it leaves an indentation.
Your body will dilute excess sugar as a defense mechanism because high sugar is toxic. It uses the water to flush the sugar out. This is why diabetics urinate so often, and why they’re thirsty.
Dry eyes are one of the most common symptoms of diabetes. The lens of your eyes gets sticky. Your eyes feel like they have sand in them; they’re red and irritated. I had terrible dry eyes in my twenties, caused by high blood sugar. My dry eyes got so bad that one of my corneas tore after the eyelid stuck to it. I had to get urgent care from an eye doctor, because I was unable to continue the road trip I was on.
My eyes got better only after I fixed my blood sugar problem.
When you have high blood sugar, your cells will end up dehydrated inside them, yet you’ll retain fluid outside the cells. This is another reason why you need to do keto and intermittent fasting. You’ll no longer be dehydrated even though your body retains fluid.
