Should I Do Keto & Intermittent Fasting With Eating Disorders? – Dr. Berg
If you have an eating disorder, I believe it’s safe to do intermittent fasting and keto.

Recently I was asked if I believe it’s safe for someone with an eating disorder to do intermittent fasting and keto. I do think it’s safe. Here’s why.
A lot of people who had or still have an eating disorder consume a tremendous amount of carbohydrates, resulting in serious blood sugar problems. Any time someone has low blood sugar issues, they also have cognitive issues. You feel highly irritable. Like you’ve been pushed out of the present time. Low blood sugar can result in anxiety and depression.
When you have anxiety and depression, you’re not going to make the right decisions for yourself. You have impulses to do things you normally wouldn’t and regret them later.
When you do keto and intermittent fasting together and do them correctly, you’ll run on fat (ketones) instead of sugar. When you run your brain on ketones, your mood elevates. You don’t have anxiety and depression anymore. You feel good, without the impulses to choose destructive actions like disordered eating.
Therefore, I recommend keto and intermittent fasting. But do it healthfully. Don’t restrict calories, and instead of eating one meal a day, eat two — but no snacking in between meals. Make sure you're eating healthy fats. You’ll become leaner, but also more healthy. An eating disorder doesn’t have to keep you from keto and intermittent fasting.
