It’s often thought that carbs are necessary for maintaining healthy serotonin levels. Find out why that’s not true!

0:00 Introduction: Will a low-carb diet lower serotonin levels?

1:46 Low carbs and serotonin

Today we’re going to look at the connection between carbohydrates and serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which is made from protein. The precursor to serotonin is tryptophan, an amino acid.

Sometimes, low serotonin is caused by low protein intake. If your stomach acid is not acidic enough, you can have trouble digesting protein, which would also cause low serotonin.

Most of the time, high insulin is the cause of low serotonin. High insulin leads to insulin resistance, which blocks the absorption of proteins.

High insulin lowers your blood sugar, negatively affecting your mood. Consuming carbohydrates will raise your blood sugar causing you to feel better temporarily, but blood sugar that is constantly rising and falling is not a long-term solution.

Fixing insulin resistance is key to maintaining healthy serotonin levels. You’ll be able to better absorb protein and stabilize your blood sugar.

A low-carb diet can improve insulin resistance so you're able to absorb the necessary precursors to build serotonin. Consuming carbohydrates and spiking insulin will not increase serotonin.
