In this video, I’ll explain the connection between memory and the hippocampus. You have two hippocampuses in your brain. They have a role in short-term memory, long-term memory, and spatial navigation. Spatial navigation means recalling where you parked your car, or locating yourself in time and space.
If you lose the role of the hippocampus, you develop Alzhemer’s or dementia. Scientists don’t entirely understand exactly what the hippocampus does, but they have confirmed it has a role in your memory.
Alzheimer’s starts very early in life; generally, in your 30’s, and your memory loss worsens over time. I believe it actually starts in the womb, if your mother eats a lot of junk food or carbs. Then you get put on formula. Here’s why I believe this: because the way to destroy your hippocampus is to have high levels of insulin and too much dietary sugar. If you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant, keep your carb intake low to keep your insulin level low. Eat quality carbs from vegetables. And avoid formula, which is filled with sugar. Breast feed instead, or make your own formula.
Besides high insulin, high cortisol — a stress hormone — will also shrink your hippocampus. The combination of stress, sugar, and high insulin is very toxic to your hippocampus.
But the good news is that the hippocampus is one of the very few areas of the brain that can regrow brain cells, known as neurogenesis. A chemical called BDNF is one way this happens; BDNF improves the communication among brain cells. There are several ways to trigger BDNF. The most potent is by intermittent fasting, which will also trigger an increase in stem cells that can be used nearly anywhere in your body for repair and regeneration.
If you have a belly, you have high insulin. Do both keto and intermittent fasting to lower your insulin levels.
Aerobic exercise can help expand your hippocampus, as can ensuring your levels of vitamin B1 (thiamine) are adequate by consuming nutritional yeast.
