In this video, I explain why antioxidants are found in plants. We already know how good they are for your health, and many plant-based foods are full of them.

To start, the gorgeous fall leaf colors are caused by the action of antioxidants. At the end of summer, the leaves get a spike of something called anthocyanin. Anthocyanin causes the rich colors you see in berries, eggplants, cherries, and grapes. It’s an antioxidant designed to protect the leaf or the plant from extreme temperatures.

Then we have the antioxidants called carotenoids, which are yellow, red, and orange. There are over 1,100 different kinds. One of them is lutein, which is very good for your eyes. Another is xanthine, which is good for your brain. Other types are tannins and flavonoids.

There are many things about antioxidants we don’t know. We don’t know, for example, if they have a direct effect on our body or an indirect one. What we do know is they are very beneficial. Antioxidants are anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer.

One theory is that antioxidants increase uric acid in the body. Uric acid is one of the most powerful antioxidants your body makes. We’re not certain if this is accurate, we do know that when you consume foods high in antioxidants, your health improves.
