While on the ketogenic diet, you may get leg and foot cramps at night. I explain why, and how you can remedy the cramps.
If you look up nocturnal leg cramps, you won’t find much information on them. But I’ve had good success treating people, and I want to share with you. This is really an electrolyte problem. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals that help the conductivity of muscles and nerves in your body. They are potassium, magnesium, calcium, and the like.
The two most common minerals involved with leg cramps are potassium and magnesium. The symptoms of a potassium and magnesium deficiency are very similar. Magnesium is involved in anything related to nerves and muscles, including your heart. It’s also involved with generating ATP, your cells’ energy. If you’re deficient you’ll get fatigue, muscle weakness, and tremors, among other symptoms.
You’ll also become deficient in potassium, with similar symptoms. Both of these minerals support you to feel relaxed and calm, as well as allowing your muscles to relax and not cramp.
You go on keto, and you get leg cramps. Here’s what may be happening: when you’re in keto adaptation, your body requires more potassium and magnesium, especially if you’re going into keto coming off of a high carb diet which will likely have already depleted these two minerals. When you add in intermittent fasting (IF), you can become deficient.
This is why I always recommend you either take potassium and magnesium with an electrolyte powder, or make sure you’re getting enough of these minerals from your diet. Leafy greens contain an abundance! I recommend 7 to 10 cups per day. If this amount bloats you, cut back then gradually increase. I also recommend consuming half raw, half cooked by steaming or stir-frying them. Make sure you consume the water they were steamed in, to get the most nutrients.
If you’re eating enough leafy greens but still getting leg cramps, your salt level is too high. Simply cut back on your salt to make your cramps go away. If you’re not consuming enough greens but lots of salt, simply increase your greens. Use sea salt not regular table salt.
Lastly, it could be that your blood pH is off. Add apple cider vinegar to your water.
Now you know how to remedy nocturnal leg cramps on the ketogenic diet.
