In this video, I explain why some people get kidney stones of the oxalate type, but some don’t.

Oxalate is a chemical that combines with calcium to form small crystals in your kidneys. There are certain foods high in oxalates including spinach, beet greens, swiss chard, and peanuts. But here’s the thing. Many people consume a lot of these foods yet don’t get oxalate kidney stones, yet others consume very little of them but do get oxalate stones.

There’s a gut microbe called oxalobacter formigenes, which has the capacity to break down and remove oxalates from your body. So clearly they’re good to have in your gut. But the thing that breaks them down most quickly is antibiotics, especially Cipro — the most widely used antibiotic in the world. (As a side note, Cipro has other side effects too such as increased risk of tendon ruptures, hypoglycemia, and mental problems.)

If you’re getting oxalate kidney stones on a regular basis, I recommend taking a good probiotic as well as taking something called hydroxy citrate. This is an excellent remedy for breaking down oxalate stones in your body. Hydroxy citrate will even help break down uric acid stones. In the meantime, research an effective probiotic so you can build healthy gut microbes.
