2:20 And now for the good news about peanut butter
In this video, I explain the good, the bad, and the ugly about peanut butter.
First, the peanut isn’t an actual tree nut. It’s a legume that grows in the soil. Its shell is thin and soft, and it easily absorbs chemicals from the soil. Peanuts are one of the most heavily sprayed crops there is; insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides. They’re not usually genetically modified organisms (GMO), which is good, but the peanut crop is usually rotated with a cotton crop that is GMO. So guess what? You’re getting glyphosate.
Peanut allergies skyrocketed by 400 percent at the same time glyphosate was introduced into the environment. I wonder if there’s a connection between the allergies and chemicals in the food.
There’s also something called aflatoxin, which is produced by a fungus that grows on peanuts. Aflatoxin causes liver cancer. As well, many brands of peanut butter are loaded with sugar, chemicals, and hydrogenated oils. Always read the label! Make sure it contains nothing but peanuts and perhaps some sea salt.
Now for the good news! There’s a brand of peanut butter called Valencia which has the lowest amount of aflatoxin. That’s good. When you buy organic peanut butter, you’re getting less chemical contamination. So with Valencia, you’re getting fewer chemicals such as glyphosate, and also less aflatoxin.
More good news: when you roast the nut or germinate it by soaking it overnight in water, you release the anti-nutrients that might irritate your digestive system and increase the availability of the peanut’s nutrients to your body.
There’s a substance called chlorophyll, the substance which makes plants green. Chlorophyll has a similar chemistry to our own blood. It has the capacity to lower aflatoxin. If you consume salad or wheat grass juice powder after you eat peanut butter, you’ll reduce the aflatoxin.
Peanuts are nutritionally comparable to actual nuts. They contain vitamin E, B vitamins, phytonutrients, and protein.
I know eating is sometimes complicated, but I want to educate you about our food supply. Peanut butter is a popular item, and it will benefit you to understand how it can be either healthy or unhealthy.
