In this video, I discuss benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is a condition when the prostate is enlarged. I explain what’s behind this, and which foods you need to consume to get it under control.

An enlarged prostate can obstruct your urine flow. The urine can then back up into your kidneys, creating toxicity. It can even back up into your liver.

BPH is a condition linked to hormones. Certain hormones have an anabolic effect on your body, which means they make things grow.

The first anabolic hormone to consider is insulin, which means you don’t want too much of it. The best way to normalize your insulin levels is healthy keto and intermittent fasting.

The second one to consider is IGF-2, or insulin-like growth factor 2. It’s similar to insulin, but also similar to human growth hormone. Keep it under control by not consuming dairy, and not having excessive amounts of protein. So, consume a moderate protein diet without dairy.

The third is testosterone, which has the capability to convert to a more powerful form called DHT. Studies are mixed. Some show that testosterone plus DHT protect against benign prostatic hyperplasia while others show it can worsen the condition. We know that testosterone is converted to DHT through an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase. Some of the most powerful inhibitors of this enzyme help improve BPH. They saw palmetto and stinging nettle root.

Fourth is estrogen. I believe it’s one of the most potent influences on BPH in addition to insulin. Your levels of both insulin and estrogen have a huge influence on whether or not you develop BPH.

Although estrogen is a female hormone, men have it too. They just shouldn’t have too much of it. Your testosterone could convert to estrogen via another enzyme, and that could be a problem. The best foods to inhibit this enzyme are cruciferous vegetables. There’s a compound called DIM that’s helpful; it’s concentrated cruciferous vegetables.

Avoid soy protein isolates, since they can increase your estrogen, as well as GMO oils. Stick to foods that are organic, wild-caught, grass-fed, and pasture-raised.

A healthy keto diet is essential to avoid ingredients that may increase estrogen and thus put you at risk for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
