Do you know how to slow down the aging process? I’ll explain.

There’s an excellent book called Oxidants in Biology. A great read although you’ll need a medical dictionary to get through it. It explains a constant battle between oxidants and antioxidants in the environment. Oxidation is like your body rusting out inside.

Your mitochondria are the energy factories of your cells. They’re the heart of your metabolism, and burn oxygen to break down fuel, releasing oxidants in the process. Some of them are good for your body because they kill off microbes. But when your mitochondria become damaged you get too much oxidation, setting you up for health problems including cancer.

You can get antioxidants from food or supplements (they’re called exogenous antioxidants) but your body will make them too. They’re called endogenous antioxidants. An important and misunderstood area is building up your antioxidant network; in other words, getting your body to make more antioxidants.

Melatonin is an important antioxidant. It occurs when you’re sleeping in the dark. It gets rid of excess hydrogen peroxide that’s produced in your body. I recommend you get more sleep or take naps.

Get regular exercise, which will build up your endogenous antioxidant network. It could be as simple as walking every day.

Next, do intermittent fasting. Get into a routine. It spikes your endogenous antioxidant network. Work up to 20 hours of fasting and a 4-hour eating window. I put a link below as to how to do this. One benefit is called autophagy, where your body recycles damaged proteins that would otherwise clog up your brain, leading to Alzheimer’s, or clogging your arteries, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Fasting really slows down the aging process.

Next, avoid excessive oxidants. Iron is an example. It can build up in your body and is hard to get rid of. High blood sugar will oxidize your eyes, kidneys, and brain, for example. Foods that are a combination of protein and sugars cause glycation, which can damage the protein in your body.

There are a number of things that can cause aging; look at the big picture and follow what I’ve explained in order to counter aging. Now you know how to slow down the aging process.
